Tom Robinson is a African-American man in the novel, " To Kill A Mockingbird," who was accused of rape and assault of Mayella Ewell. Even though Atticus, his lawyer, proved that Tom wasn't guilty, but because of his race Tom was found guilty. Tom has a wife and three children, and is twenty-five years old. He also is a hardworking, generous man and spent most of his time helping Mayella with everthing he can in a barn. Robinson was treated as if he was an animal and worth nothing because he was black. Tom was poor, but always very happy. He lived on the "negro side of the town," which was behind dumpsters where the Ewells also lived. According to prison guards Tom was attempting to escape prison, so the guards shot him 17 times. During the trial, to prove Tom wasn't guilty, Atticus tested both his arms to show that he didn't assault Mayella. Tom's right arm caught the glass cup, but Tom explained how he can't catch with his left because he lost function with it.
Atticus is one of the most important characters in the novel and is the father to Jem and Scout. He was the attorney for Tom Robinson's trial. He is a highly respected person in the community. Throughout the novel, he was a role model to Scout. Honesty is hidden around him because when he shot the "mad dog", he took his glasses off because he didn't want to kill racism. In the novel, he is seen as a man who despises racism, but at the end of the book says otherwise. Atticus taught his children to not be races and to ignore all hateful comments said in the community. Atticus is also a very calm person because when Bob Ewell spit on him, he didn't pay no mind to it and walked away. He also believes blacks and whites should be treated equally, but sort of treats blacks better than the white. After Atticus trying his best to prove Tom wasn't guilty for the crime he was accused of, many began to hate him for choosing the blacks sides.
Boo Radley is also known as Arthur. Boo was juvenile delinquent who has been kept in his basement for 16 years, and who was viewed a mysterious, dangerous person. Maycomb knew about why Boo was kept in his basement, but never knew how he looked like. Rumors of how Boo looked like spread all over Maycomb, but were never true. Boo was also abused as a child until he was in his 30's. Throughout the book, Boo comes out of his home. The first time was the fire when Jem and Scout were outside watching the fire in the cold. While they were watching the fire, Boo had put a blanket around Scout, but she didn't realize she had a blanket until Calpurnia pointed it out. Boo also came out to save Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell and also gave both of them gifts too. As you can tell, Boo cares a lot for Jem and Scout. He hides behind the shadows watching all the racism and secrets in Maycomb.
Scout is also another very important character. Scout is viewed as a weird girl because she acts more as a boy than a girl. She has a brother named Scout, and Atticus is her father. Her full and real name is Jean-Louis Finch. Scout looked up to her father as a role model, but at the end of the book realizes her father isn't who she think he is. Scout is a very curious girl too. The novel, "To Kill A Mockingbird," is told from Scout's perspective. The begininng of the book starts off with her at age 6, and ends with her as 9 years old. Scout is the only girl out of her family, besides Calpurnia. Scout was always curious about Boo Radley and how he looked like. Scout is considered a very smart girl since the can read really well in first grade. Scout believed that the white and black are equal. Though, she didn't see how poorly the blacks were treated until after Tom Robinson's trial. She also believed that Tom Robinson wasn't guilty. At times Scout is very bossy. Because Scout was more of a tomboy, she would do whatever Dill and Jem did.
