Emily Jack an author stated, “Since the beginning of human existence on the planet, disease have played a significant in the events of every era.” This quote simply means that there are countless diseases that affected many lives in the 1930’s. One of the most aggressive diseases was poliomyelitis which is also called polio as a shorter term. Another severe, aggressive disease was cholera. Lastly, the disease malaria was caused by an infected mosquito that bit an human. Although there were many hardships in the 1930’s, diseases plagued this time period.
To start off, a critical disease that occur in the 1930’s was cholera. Cholera was an illness that occur when drinking dirty food and water. There was an estimation of approximately three to five million cases in the 1930’s ( Cholera - Vibrio cholerae infection). According to the article, “Disease: A brief guide to causes, symptoms, history, and treatment” states, “Estimated 3-5 million cases and over 100,000 deaths occur each year.” Cholera in the 1930’s was a deadly disease that can kill an human within hours if not treated. Each year there were lots of cases, but less than half survived. For cholera, there aren’t any symptoms. So, if you had the disease, you wouldn’t and die within the next couple of hours. Also, cholera occurs all year round (Cholera Epidemics). A cure wasn’t found until after the American Revolutionary War. Overall, cholera was a deadly disease during the 1930’s.
To continue, another disease was malaria. This disease was caused by an infected mosquito that bit an human. After being bitten, symptoms occur over ten days to four weeks. Some of the symptoms were chills, a fever, sweating, headaches, and muscle pain (Jack Learn NC). The infected mosquitos were located in tropical and subtropical areas. Malaria has been around for a long time, but became the most severe in the 1930’s. There were many cases because of this disease. According to the article, “Disease: A brief guide to causes, symptoms, history, and treatment,” states, “While only 1300 cases of malaria were reported each year, 300 to 500 million cases around the world.. resulting in more than 1 million deaths.” Malaria was very aggressive disease that killed a little more than a million. Lots of people in the 1930’s suffered from this disease, and the only way to avoid this disease were to not be in areas where the infected mosquitoes were located at. All in all, malaria was a severe diseases that costed many lives in the 1930’s.
Furthermore, one of the most aggressive disease was poliomyelitis which is the medical term, or also called polio. Polio is caused by person-to-person contact. There are three different types of infections which are sub clinical infections, non paralytic poliomyelitis, and paralytic poliomyelitis (Jack Learn NC). About 90% of cases of full recovery is possible, but 10% end up in full paralysis. In 1935, there were two trials of teams working to develop vaccines for polio. Sadly, both of the trials came to a devastating end. Poliomyelitis affected lives at every young age. According to the article, “Disease: A brief guide to causes, symptoms, history, and treatment,” states, “Polio mainly strikes children under the age of 5, and until the 1950’s, thousands of children around the world were permanently disabled by polio.” Polio was very aggressive mainly striking toddlers. Because of how aggressive polio was, children who were infected were permanently disabled from polio. Altogether, polio was probably the most aggressive disease that occur in the 1930’s.
To sum up, there were many hardships in the 1930’s, diseases plagued this time period. A severely disease was also cholera which was a disease with no symptoms and death within hours. Malaria was another disease that was caused when a human was bitten from an infected mosquito with 1 million deaths almost every year. Lastly, the most aggressive disease was poliomyelitis as the medical term, or also called as polio. This disease affected many lives of toddlers that became permanently disable. If these diseases did not occur in the 1930’s, life would have had a remarkable different impact.
