Criminals in the 1930s
In the 1930s there were many horrific events that lead many people becoming criminals to be able to take care of themselves or others. “This is my plan, there’s no plan B, and this world will remember me.” This quote comes from Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie and Clyde are a couple. Bonnie and Clyde met in Texas in January, 1930. They are known for robberies, burglaries, and multiple murders. This quote shows that Bonnie and Clyde have always went into a plan without a backup. When they say that people will remember them they mean for how they run in head first with no other plan. They want people to know that they are not afraid and would do anything to be known. Another big thief in the 1930s was John Dillinger. John Dillinger is known for theft, murder, and terrorizing many people with his gang. And the last well known for robbing banks and trains, as well as kidnapping rich business executives were the Barker/Karpis gang. The Barker/Karpis gang was a gang that was mainly about the brothers, Alvin Karpis and Fred Barker. But they ended up splitting up in 1935 in January. Because of all the menace in the 1930s it became a horrifying time period to live in.
Bonnie and Clyde is one of the most well known couple for their thief there has ever been record of. Bonnie was 19 and was married to an imprisoned murderer; Clyde was 21 and unmarried. They were known to be killed in 1934, and known to 13 murders and several robberies and burglaries. “The Commissioner at Dallas, Texas, issued a warrant against Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, charging them with the interstate transportation, from Dallas to Oklahoma, of the automobile stolen in Illinois.” (Bonnie and Clyde-FBI 1). This shows that Bonnie and Clyde do whatever they want and rarely get caught. Clyde had been going back and forth between Texas and Louisiana. Bonnie and Clyde appeared in an automobile that they stole and when they attempted to drive away, the officers opened fire. That is when Bonnie and Clyde were killed instantly.
John Dillinger was born on June 22, 1903 in the Oak Hill section of Indianapolis. His Nickname was known as Jackrabbit. John Dillinger was apart of a gang. A break with his father and trouble with the law led Dillinger to enlist in the Navy. “Almost immediately, Dillinger robbed a bank in Bluffton, Ohio.” (John Dillinger-FBI 1). This shows that once you are a thief you will always be a thief since he robbed a bank right after signing up for the Navy. His period of infamy began on May 10, 1933. He served eight-and-a-half years of his sentence after being put in jail for the robbery.
Lastly, The Barker/Karpis gang was the last well known gang in the 1930s. The Barker/Karpis gang was made from the brothers Alvin Karpis and Fred Barker. They were known for mutiple kidnappings and burglaries. “William A. Hamm, Jr., President of the Theodore Hamm Brewing Company, he was grabbed by four shadowed figures and pushed into the back of a car. Alvin Karpis, "Doc" Barker, Charles Fitzgerald, and the other members of the gang had gotten away, but they'd left their fingerprints behind—all over the ransom notes.” (Barker/Karpis-FBI 1). This quote shows that they gang was carless and didn’t even try to cover things off which made them get caught. They ended shortly after both big kidnappings and put them on ransom.
These are just some of the many things these criminals have done in the 1930s. These criminals were feared and put people on high alert. Til this day there are many criminals that people fear. These were just some in the 1930s. So because of all the hostile behavior in the 1930s it became a scary time period to live in.
